It’s no surprise we think that because after all, the education system we know today is largely unchanged from what it was during the industrial revolution and the world has changed immensely since then.
Continuing Education
NB I just skimmed the beginning of the Article but here’s my view on education:
Education should be continual. Why? Because it takes a lifetime of continuing education to know even less of what we know now than university graduates of the industrial revolution knew of what we knew then.
I know! I am a 74-years-old learned-ignorant generalist with two general BA and one unspecialized MA in ZooAnthropoSociology all gained during a lifetime of studies to find out why humanity cannot use its knowledge resources to solve the problem brought about by progress.
The reason for this is specialization:
Of course, our failures are a consequence of many factors, but possibly one of the most important is the fact that society operates on the theory that specialization is the key to success, not realizing that specialization precludes comprehensive thinking (Buckminster Fuller, Operating Manual For Spaceship Earth, 1968, My bold)
And, after 45 years I can tell you that the reason for the failure of education is that specialists are too busied acquiring theoretical knowledge or applying it for profit:
CI (Comprehensive intelligence) acquired during a life-long paid-continuing-non-profit education is the only solution for AI automation.
We are going to do that naturally when we recognize 1) what Robert Oppenheimer, one of the creators of the atomic bomb, already knew in the 60s, that “We need new knowledge like we need a hole in the head.” 2) and, as Claude Houghton already saw before Oppenheimer, that “It needs but half an eye to see that science has reached a frontier. It must go forward into a landscape of increasing strangeness or become the plagiarist of its own past.” and 3), as I am telling you now, that we need to use all the knowledge that we have acquired and the resources of all nations in a coordinated effort to resolve the “existential” problem presently confronting humanity….
How are we going to do 3)? By “declaring war” to our real enemy, ourselves, by going into “remission”… which will also come naturally, when we realized the fact that we are all composite members of the same individual species presently metastasizing debilitating cancer into Gaïa organism, our living host. Work in Progress.
